I’ve borrowed this introduction to Carmel from the Blooming Arts Alliance website www.BloomingtonArts.org where there is a link to email her.
“Carmel Montoya owns Baba Press, a bookbinding studio dedicated to creating one of a kind personalized journals, sketchbooks, photo albums, and other hand bound books including artist’s books. They also repair books, and specialize in teaching bookbinding and book arts. At Baba you can find decorated papers, hand printed cards, and other hand made artistic treasures. Baba is located in the IFell building on 4th street and Rogers, next to the Rainbow Bakery.”
I meet Carmel through her brother-in-law, the very fine guitarist and singer Tom Lozano. Carmel was in need of having some work photographed for submissions to galleries. I find her work challenging to photograph. Each is a one of a kind book, often doing all sort of imaginative things I wouldn’t normally think of a book doing. Several of her works were at my studio last January (2014) when a big snow storm knocked out our power for four and a half days. One night while I was thinking of all the things I couldn’t do because the power was out I realized that all of my camera and flash batteries were charged up. With a half dozen candles and a flashlight to help focus the camera I began working on many of the photographs found in the galleries here.
